Summer Associate Profile – Courtney Specht

In the legal profession, summer associate positions provide law students with hands-on experience working for a law firm in the summer after their first or second year of law school. These positions are opportunities to experience life as an attorney firsthand, allowing students to embed themselves in a firm to do much of the same work they will likely do as a full-time associate post-graduation.

Like an apprenticeship, the summer associates work side-by-side with our attorneys and develop an appreciation for the unique aspects of practicing law at WilliamsMcCarthy. Experiencing the culture and clients of Wilmac is not only valuable for the summer associates, but the firm can also assess the abilities of summer associates to be successful once they graduate, pass the bar, and are ready for the practice of law.

Meet Courtney Specht, who attends Northern Illinois University College of Law and recently completed her time as a summer associate.

What made you decide to go to law school?

I have had an interest in law since a young age. I have always enjoyed intellectually rigorous environments, something that initially led me to pursue an engineering major during my first four semesters of undergrad. However, I ultimately realized that I was seeking a path where I could engage more directly with people and make a meaningful impact.

With my law degree, I hope to continue growing in my legal career and become confident and comfortable in the courtroom. Ultimately, I want to use my skills to help others and contribute meaningfully to my community and clients.

Why did you pursue a summer associate position at WilliamsMcCarthy?

I specifically wanted to be a summer associate at this firm because I had the opportunity to visit during my undergrad and was immediately impressed, not only by its outstanding reputation and the high caliber of its work, but also by the way others spoke about the firm with such respect. It was clear it was a place where excellence and professionalism were held in the highest regard.

What did you enjoy most about your summer with the firm?

This summer I was able to take on more projects because I had more experience. Having just completed What I enjoyed most during my time here was the sense that I truly fit in. I was exposed to a wide range of practice areas, allowing me to explore different aspects of the law, and I appreciated how approachable and supportive everyone was. I shared many laughs, learned a lot, and left each day feeling even more confident that I had chosen the right path.

How will this program benefit you as you continue in law school and consider what comes after law school?

This experience has significantly strengthened my legal research and writing abilities. More importantly, it has allowed me to see the practice of law beyond the classroom and applied in real-world situations, with real clients and in various practice areas.

What advice would you give other students interested in a summer associate experience?

It is okay to not know everything – no one expects you to. There are so many attorneys and staff who are willing to help, support you, and answer your questions. Embrace the learning process and enjoy the experience, because every attorney you meet once stood exactly where you are now.

What was your experience like working in the Rockford community this summer?

I have really loved where Wilmac is situated. It is surrounded by great restaurants and local spots. Even something as simple as walking along the river or to a nearby restaurant for lunch was an enjoyable activity. As someone who enjoys trying new foods, I found Rockford to be a great city for a “foodie” with diverse and unique dining options.

Although I grew up near Rockford, working here has deepened my appreciation for the city. I have gotten to see firsthand how close-knit the legal community is here. I am also lucky to be receiving recommendations for places to eat and many things to do.
