Joel Huotari Helping to Further Develop Intellectual Property and Technology Law

WilliamsMcCarthy LLP Partner Joel M. Huotari is a director of the Intellectual Property & Technology Law Section of the State Bar of Wisconsin. He is currently serving a three-year term, which runs through June 30, 2019. For the past two years, Joel also has served as chair of the Door County Intellectual Property Academy (IP Academy) planning committee. This year marks the 13th annual IP Academy and is scheduled for July 19-20, 2018 in Sturgeon Bay, WI.

The IP Academy provides intellectual property lawyers with cutting edge analysis of today’s hottest IP issues. As chair of the Academy, Joel is responsible for leading a committee that is responsible for planning all the Continued Legal Education (CLE) presentations, securing speakers and organizing networking activities. Some highlights of this year’s CLE topics include:

  • Right of Publicity in a Social Media-driven World
  • Legends of Wisconsin Intellectual Property, including representatives from the legendary organizations Harley-Davidson, Inc. and Spectrum Brands
  • The Seven Habits of a Highly Ethical IP Lawyer
  • Recent Developments in Patent Law – 2018
  • A Judge’s “View from the Bench”

The IP Academy is proud to be providing 10 law students with scholarships to this year’s Academy. With more than 80 people in attendance annually, the IP Academy also is family friendly with evening activities (reception and sunset cruise) open to guests. The Intellectual Property & Technology Law Section has approximately 600 members, which is governed by a 10-member board of directors and officers. The purpose of the section is to bring together members of the State Bar of Wisconsin who have a special interest in the fields of intellectual property and technology law; to participate in the presentation of educational seminars in such fields; to further the development and improvement of the law in such fields; and to disseminate information in such fields through meetings, programs and publications.
