Growing up in Rochelle, Illinois, Morgan Knight always seemed to have an interest in law.
“I’ve always been fascinated by the legal field,” said Knight. “Even as a kid, I was drawn to stories about leadership and justice, and I remember professors mentioning law school during my first year of college and feeling like that path really fit me.”
After years of hard work and studying, Knight’s curiosity for law grew into a genuine passion for helping people navigate life’s most personal challenges. She recently joined WilliamsMcCarthy LLP as a full-time associate after spending two summers with the firm as a summer associate. Those experiences, she said, played a key role in her decision to return.
“I heard great things about WilliamsMcCarthy from people in the Rockford area, and during my summers here, I got to see firsthand how respected and collaborative the firm is,” said Knight. “Everyone was welcoming and invested in my growth. I knew it was where I wanted to start my career.”
Morgan plans to focus her practice on family law, employment law, and municipal and local government law. Each of these areas offers an opportunity to make a real impact on people and communities.
“In family law, you’re helping clients through what can be one of the hardest times in their lives. It’s rewarding to be their advocate,” she said. “Employment law allows me to help employers understand best practices and support their teams effectively, and local government law connects back to my interest in how policies and communities intersect.”
During her law studies, Knight clerked for the City of Champaign Legal Department, where she gained valuable experience in municipal law and developed a deeper understanding of how different departments collaborate to serve the public. That experience also inspired her award-winning paper on police and municipal duty in suicide prevention, a topic influenced by her brother’s work as a police officer. Through that research, she explored gaps in crisis-response training and examined how the law can play a role in guiding more effective public-safety practices.
Morgan’s commitment to helping others extends beyond her work. She’s passionate about education, children’s issues, women’s issues, and elections, and she hopes to get more involved in those causes locally.
When it comes to practicing law, Morgan emphasizes connection and communication.
“I want my clients to feel listened to and understood,” she said. “A big concern people often have is not knowing what’s happening with their case. I want to make sure they feel informed and supported at every step.”
Outside of work, Morgan enjoys staying active and creative through yoga, reading, walking her dogs, and baking. A former track and field athlete, she competed at the state level in the 4×400 relay, an experience that helped her build discipline and teamwork, skills that continue to guide her in her legal career.
From Rochelle to Rockford, Morgan’s journey reflects both her dedication to the profession and her strong connection to Northern Illinois. She values the opportunity to practice law in the region where she grew up and to give back to the community that shaped her.
Morgan Knight focuses her practice on family law, employment law, and municipal/local government law and is licensed to practice in Illinois. She can be contacted at mknight@wilmac.com or 815-987-8947.
