Marc C. Gravino is a partner in the firm’s commercial and complex litigation practice, having joined the firm in 1988. He concentrates his practice in the areas of commercial and complex litigation, insurance coverage and defense, and personal injury and products liability.

Mr. Gravino has represented manufacturers, insurance companies, financial institutions, health care providers, individual medical professionals, governmental entities, and individuals. Over the course of his practice, he has represented clients in matters involving anti-trust litigation, insurance coverage disputes, environmental matters, copyright, trade secret and other intellectual property litigation, construction litigation, business suits for accounting, catastrophic injury cases, product recall matters, franchise cases, ERISA matters, non-competition agreements, and administrative litigation with governmental agencies. In addition, Mr. Gravino has handled matters relating to laws governing the Internet, such as the federal “anti-cybersquatting” law aimed at businesses that pirate the use of other companies’ trade names on the Internet.

For example, in the area of copyright litigation, Mr. Gravino defended more than twenty-five home builders in federal cases brought across the country under the Copyright Act and the Digital Millenium Copyright Act involving copyrighted architectural plans. Mr. Gravino represented The Valvoline Company, a subsidiary of Ashland Inc., in the catastrophic head injury case of Donovan v. The Valvoline Company, and in the insurance declaratory judgment action of Ashland Inc. v. National Union Fire Insurance Company. In the area of complex, multi-party insurance coverage litigation, he represented Aircraft Gear Corporation in the case of Aircraft Gear Corporation v. Certain Underwriters at Lloyd’s, London, which involved insurance issues relating to military helicopter litigation. He represented Tuf Racing Products, Inc., in a complex franchise lawsuit, Tuf Racing v. American Suzuki Motor Corporation, in both the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois and in the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit. In the area of environmental insurance coverage, Mr. Gravino represented Haldex Barnes Corporation in the federal court case of Maryland Casualty Company v. Haldex Barnes Corporation. In the area of insurer-agency agreements, he represented Design Benefit Plans in the federal court case of Design Benefit Plans v. Enright. In the area of corporate litigation, Mr. Gravino served as co-counsel with a Chicago firm on behalf of local manufacturer J.L. Clark, Inc., in the case of J.L. Clark, Inc. v. SIG Combibloc, and represented local manufacturer Roper Whitney of Rockford, Inc., in the case of Roper Whitney v. Quality Hydraulics. In the area of copyright and trade secret litigation, he represented Rockford Linear Actuation, Inc. in the federal court case, Eaton Corporation v. Rockford Linear Actuation, Inc., and he represented International Distribution Alliance in the companion state and federal court cases, Pacific Bearing Corp. v. International Distribution Alliance, Inc.

Mr. Gravino is an active participant in community affairs, having served on a variety of not-for-profit organizations over the years, including serving as a founding board member of the Northern Illinois Botanical Society, and as a board member of the New American Theater. Mr. Gravino currently serves on the editorial board of The Lawyer, a monthly publication of the Winnebago County Bar Association, and he serves on the advisory board of Leading Lawyers Network. In addition, Mr. Gravino has volunteered to serve as a musician in more than thirty musical productions performed over the years in local venues.

Mr. Gravino is a member of the trial bar of the Federal District Court, Northern District of Illinois, and is admitted to practice in the Federal District Court, Western and Eastern Districts of Wisconsin. He is also admitted to practice before the United States Court of Appeals, Seventh Circuit, as well as the state courts in Illinois and Wisconsin. In addition, Mr. Gravino serves as pro hac counsel in federal courts across the country in a variety of intellectual property and commercial litigation matters.
